W G Bagnall No.300 - built to 1:32 scale The loco itself was constructed almost entirely from nickel silver sheet and bar stock. A full article describing its construction can be found in 'MODEL RAILWAY JOURNAL - Issue no.1. I later found out that the positioning of the reversing lever and the coal bunker were not correct. A full prototype history and revised drawings appeared in NG&IRM REVIEW - Issue 19 - pages 89-91. A coreless motor, with integral gear head giving a reduction of 1:59 drove the leading axle via a 1:1 helical gearset. The loco was both smooth and silent in operation. Couplers are old Alexander 'link & pin' zamac castings, in Kadee draft boxes - while they were very convincing, worked well on the sharp curves - they were not automatic and needed a careful hand to couple and un-couple. |
